CBD Vs. THC: What’s the Difference?

cbd vs thc

Drugs are one of the significant components of medicines nowadays. Some medications are highly beneficial to maintain a healthy body when taken in a limited amount. One of these drugs is ‘Marijuana.’ Generally found in Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, this psychoactive drug contains 483 compounds and 65 cannabinoids. CBD and THC are some of the extracts of this psychoactive drug.

What Is CBD?

The human brain contains cannabidiol receptors, which help in the psychological process in appetite, pain, mood, and memory. Hence, these receptors play a significant role in diseases like depression and cancer. CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the 65 cannabinoids present in Marijuana.

Generally, this cannabinoid is used as a relaxing medication. It does not come in the category of psychoactive drugs; hence, they bind the cannabidiol receptors very weakly. When a person intakes this medication, it neutralizes the cannabidiol receptors and creates a weak psychological effect. This effect helps a patient to overcome pain, depression, and increase appetite for a short period. The result of this medication is temporary, and almost no side effect is observed from it. Though, there are very few countries that allow non-medical use of CBD.

What Is THC?

THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the 483 compounds extracted from Marijuana. Unlike CBD, THC is a powerful and psychoactive drug. It binds the cannabidiol receptors for an extended period with a powerful effect. This medication is helpful for conditions like anxiety, depression, pain, and appetite. Almost all the countries in the world have limited the use of THC to extreme medical cases. Hence, the non-medical use of this psychoactive drug is illegal. This drug is well known for getting the patient high and leading to psychological effects like hallucinations and slow thinking processes. It can even lead to redness of eyes.

Many research studies have shown that excessive usage can lead to permanent damage to the receptors. This drug can be considered as the concentrated version of CBD.  Many patients have reported long term psychological effects when taken without a prescription from a doctor.

CBD Vs. THC: Chemical Structure

CBD and THC have the same number of carbon and hydrogen atoms. However, their structure difference leads to different properties. CBD was first discovered in 1940, while THC was founded in 1963. The structure of CBD contains, two benzene like structures connected to a linear chain. While the structure of THC includes three benzene ring-like structures attached to a linear chain of Hydrogen and Carbon. The chemical formulae of both CBD and THC are C21 H30 O2.

Hence, their molecular mass is also the same, i.e.  314.4 g/mol. Though there is only the difference of arrangement of elements in both the compounds, but their properties, vary by a huge margin. Any patient prescribed with CBD cannot take THC as the difference in structure leads to different effects on the body and the mind. Both of these extracts have low solubility in water, but they have moderate solubility in organic compounds. Also, THC is well known for being an effective compound to bind glass and plastic.

CBD Vs. THC: What Can Get You High?

Getting high from a medication means getting psychological effects, such as hallucination, slow thinking process, and decreased coordination of the body. There are various drugs known that get you high. The results of these drugs are the reason behind the restriction on them. THC is a psychoactive drug that can get you high even when taken in a limited amount. This drug can lead to various psychological and physical effects, such as redness of eyes, hallucinations, imbalanced coordination, and many more.

THC Vs. CBD: Medical Benefits

Both these extracts of Marijuana are used for almost the same kind of conditions. Some of the common diseases are chronic pain, depression, and low appetite. However, there are various conditions where only one of these is effective. CBD is highly effective for conditions like nausea, mental disorders, and migraines, while THC is highly used in conditions like depression, glaucoma, and insomnia. Overall, you can say that THC is the more robust version of CBD. However, it has strong psychological effects too that can lead to mental damage in case of over dosage. To overcome these adverse effects, we see a combination of CBD and THC, which reduces the permanent adverse effects of THC. These combinations are more useful for almost all conditions like depression.

THC Vs. CBD: Side Effects

Through intense research, we have come to know that CBD has no side effects, even in the case of high dosage. However, we still suggest you get it prescribed by a doctor. Unlike CBD, THC has temporary side effects like redness in eyes, loss of memory, imbalance in coordination, intense relaxation, dry mouth, slow reaction of reflexes, and bloodshot eyes. Many patients have reported permanent damage, too, in case of a high dosage of THC. Hence, THC must not be taken until prescribed by a doctor.

Also, THC can only be taken by adults as it causes permanent psychological damages in the case of children and teenagers. Many countries have banned the usage of THC as this psychoactive drug has lead to the death of many patients. Even in the United States, only a few states have legalized medication through this drug. Hence, you must know whether this drug is legal in your country or not.

CBD is easily available in any country in the world. However, due to the high amount of side-effects of THC, almost all countries in the world have restricted the usage of this psychoactive drug to extreme medical cases only.

CBD and THC – Better Together?

The combination of these two has proven highly effective in dealing with various conditions like chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. Suppose a patient has a moderate level of pain, and CBD is not able to bind the receptors well. In this case, the combination of CBD and THC is used as concentrated THC may lead to permanent psychological damage. There are various combinations of these two available in the market. Some are highly recommended for sleeping disorders, while others are highly effective for depression and chronic pain. Therefore, we can say that instead of taking these as individual medication, it is better to take a combination of these two.

CBD Vs. THC: What Is Legal?

The legal usage of CBD varies from country to country. In Europe, countries like Germany, Spain, France, and the UK limit the usage of CBD between 0.2-0.3 % in medicine. While in North and South America, there is no restriction on the usage of CBD. Since Asia is the origin of Marijuana, you will easily find CBD in countries like India, China, and Pakistan. The usage of CBD is shallow in these countries, but the laws here are very unclear regarding the limit on the amount of CBD in medicine.

In the case of THC, the rules and regulations are stringent all over the world. Only countries like Canada, South Africa, and a few states of the United States allow non-medical usage of THC. While in countries like India, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain, the usage of THC is illegal, but there are no strict rules or punishments. However, countries like the UK, China, and Russia take strict actions against the usage of THC.

In almost all countries, the usage of THC is limited to extreme medical cases, non-medical usage of this psychoactive drug is prohibited in nearly all the nations.

Does CBD Oil Have THC?

Almost all CBD oil contains a small amount of THC. This amount varies from country to country between 0.2-0.3%. Therefore, if you undergo a drug test just after taking CBD oil, you will get a false-positive result in it.  Most CBD oil contains a small amount of THC because it increases the effect of the solution overall. This oil is similar to the combination of CBD and THC, which we discussed earlier. These solutions are highly effective for conditions like depression, chronic pain, sleeping disorder, and low appetite.

Final Thoughts

CBD and THC are beneficial for a patient to overcome conditions like chronic pain, sleeping disorder, low appetite, nausea, depression, and migraine. Both are extracts of the plant Marijuana that is easily found in the Indian sub-continent. Both have the same chemical formulae but different chemical structures. However, unlike CBD or Cannabidiol, you need to have a doctor’s prescription to take medication through THC. Also, make sure that the consumption of THC is legal in your country, and you are taking a limited dosage of the drug.

THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is much more potent than CBD. Hence, it should be taken only in extreme medical cases or in extreme conditions of depression, chronic pain, and sleeping disorders. Also, it is better to take the combination of CBD and THC like in CBD oils. They are much more useful than pure CBD and less harmful than pure THC.
